At the Customs Laboratory in Amsterdam around thirty chemical analysts are occupied each day in investigating samples from a wide variety of products. Frequently it is a question of what rate should be calculated for a particular product. Sometimes there is also a question of whether a product contains prohibited substances. Every investigator has his or her own specialisation. Esther Schimmel (right), for example, is primarily occupied with wood, while her colleague Hinke Venema is completely at home in the world of food supplements.
